New technology has created a way for ordinary citizens to
independently make up their own minds and publish information for
anyone else to read without having to have massive resources. The
age where only the rich and the powerful had the means of
communicating to the masses are gone. Never before have we had
the ability for everyone to share their own opinions and voices over
the world.
Some 50 years ago, long before the age of information the United Nations expressed the importance of this ability in the Universal Declarations of Human Rights, Article 19. "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes the freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any means regardless of frontiers." Free speech is a right, not a privilege.
This right is continually being challenged by politicians and big business around the world, and unless we stand up and keep this way of communicating to ourselves, we may loose it before we notice..
